How We Build. How We Lead.

The Ten Commandments

Two frameworks. Ten values. One identity - built from the name itself. These are not aspirational posters on a wall. They are the operating system of this team.

Nairobi, Kenya Founded 2025 Built for Africa's Legal Profession
The Acrostic Framework

Every value is a letter in our name.

We didn't choose ten values and then name the company. The company name chose the values. AKILI - Swahili for intelligence - defines how we think. SUITE - a unified collection - defines how we execute. Together they spell out the exact culture we are building, one letter at a time.

AKILI - The Intelligence Framework
A
Accountability
Core Value
Own it. Fix it. Learn from it.
You own your outcomes - not just your tasks. If something breaks and it touches your work, you don't wait to be told. You name the problem, own the fix, and share what you learned so it never happens twice. Accountability is not blame. It is the fastest path from failure to improvement.
"I shipped the bug - here's the fix and here's what I'm changing in my process." Never: "that wasn't my part."
K
Kindness
Core Value
Human-first in a profession that forgets it.
Law is a profession known for its coldness. We build differently. Every advocate using Akili Suite is a person under pressure - deadlines, difficult clients, sleepless nights. We build with that human reality in mind, and we lead with it in every interaction inside this team too.
Feedback delivered privately, praise given publicly. No one is made to feel small for not knowing something. Curiosity is welcomed, never mocked.
I
Intelligence
Core Value
Data over instinct - always.
Akili means intelligence. It is the name on the door and the standard we hold ourselves to. We make decisions based on evidence, not ego. We ask "how do you know?" not to challenge, but because we genuinely want the strongest answer available. Opinions without data are just feelings.
Every major decision is documented with the reasoning behind it. When we are wrong, we say so - loudly enough for everyone to learn from it.
L
Legacy
Core Value
We are building for the next century.
We are not building a product. We are building the operating infrastructure for Africa's legal profession - for the next 100 years. Every line of code, every design decision, every client relationship is a brick in something that will outlast all of us. Act accordingly. Cut no corners that future Africans will have to pay for.
Technical debt is named when it is created, not discovered when it collapses. We build things we are proud to hand to the next person.
I
Ingenuity
Core Value
Find the elegant path through the hard problem.
We operate in a context where most problems have not been solved before - African legal practice, edge-native architecture, AI at the price point of a subscription. The obvious path is often closed. We find a better one. Ingenuity is not about complexity. It is about finding the simplest solution that works brilliantly.
If you've been stuck on the same problem for two days, you are expected to ask for a second brain. Struggling alone is not resilience - it is waste.
SUITE - The Execution Framework
S
Stewardship
Operating Principle
Guard what clients trust us with.
Law firms trust us with their most sensitive assets - client identities, case strategy, financial records, privileged communications. That trust is not a feature benefit. It is a sacred obligation. We treat every piece of data as if it belonged to someone we love. Because it does - to someone's client, someone's family, someone's livelihood.
Security is never a backlog item. Every engineer who ships data infrastructure asks: "Would I be comfortable if this client could see exactly how I built this?"
U
Ubuntu
Operating Principle
I am because we are.
Ubuntu is one of Africa's most profound contributions to human philosophy. It means: a person is a person through other people. We do not win alone. Individual brilliance matters here only when it lifts the people around it. The engineer who ships the cleanest code but makes the team feel small has failed.
Every All-Hands begins with a win from every person - not just the loudest voice. Credit flows to the team. When someone struggles, the team asks what it can do - not whose fault it is.
I
Impact
Operating Principle
If it doesn't make a lawyer's day better, it doesn't ship.
Every feature, every button, every API route exists for one reason: to make a practising lawyer's working life measurably better. Not to impress investors. Not to win a design award. Not because it was technically interesting. If you cannot name the specific advocate whose day will be different because of this work, it should not be prioritised.
Every sprint review includes one real user story - what a named advocate could do after this sprint that they could not do before it.
T
Tenacity
Operating Principle
We do not fold - we find a way.
Building a startup in Africa is hard. Building a legal-tech startup in Africa - where the market is fragmented, budgets are tight, and every international competitor thinks they can copy-paste their product and win - is harder. We will hit walls. The response is always a plan. Never a white flag.
At Akili Suite, "we tried and failed" is celebrated more than "we played it safe and survived." The only unacceptable outcome is giving up before the problem is solved.
E
Excellence
Operating Principle
The standard is always one level higher than expected.
A lawyer holds their client's reputation in their hands. We hold the lawyer's reputation in ours. That chain of trust demands excellence at every link. We do not ship work we are quietly ashamed of. We do not let a bug survive in production because fixing it would be inconvenient. Good enough is not a product strategy - it is a slow exit strategy.
Before anything leaves your hands - code, email, design, presentation - ask: "Is this the best I can do in the time I had?" If the answer is no, and you have 10 more minutes, spend them.
On the name

Akili.
A word that carries weight.

Akili (اكيلي) is Swahili for intelligence, wisdom, and mental acuity - drawn from Arabic ʿaql (عقل), meaning reason. It is one of the most respected words in East African languages. A suite is a unified collection - modules that work as one. Together: a complete system of intelligence.

The ten values above are not additions to this meaning. They are its precise definition. We didn't name ourselves after the culture - the culture named itself after us.

What this looks like in practice

Culture as infrastructure.

These ten values are not decorative. They are the operating system beneath everything we build - and the hiring filter for everyone who joins.

Intelligence-Led
Every decision is documented, questioned, and grounded in evidence. We ask "how do you know?" because we want the strongest answer - not to score points.
🌍
Africa-Rooted
Ubuntu is not a motivational phrase on a slide. It shapes how credit flows, how we respond when someone struggles, and how we define what it means to win.
🔒
Built to Last
Legacy and stewardship are not abstract. They are the reason we name technical debt when it is created, and why security is never a backlog item.
We're building the team

These values are the job description.

If you read these ten commandments and felt recognition - the sense that this is how you already try to work - we want to hear from you.
